How is tongue tie diagnosed?
Tongue tie is typically diagnosed through a physical examination by a healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician, lactation consultant, or dentist. The diagnosis is based on observing the appearance and movement of the tongue, particularly the length and thickness of the lingual frenulum. In infants, difficulty with breastfeeding, such as problems with latching, poor weight gain, and prolonged feeding times, may prompt an evaluation for tongue tie. The healthcare provider may ask the parent about any feeding issues and observe the baby during feeding. For older children and adults, speech difficulties, dental issues, or problems with oral hygiene may lead to an assessment for tongue tie. In some cases, additional assessments, such as speech therapy evaluations, may be conducted to determine the extent of the condition and its impact on speech development.
