What causes a toothache?
A toothache can be caused by a variety of factors, with the most common being tooth decay, which occurs when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the enamel and dentin, leading to cavities. Other potential causes of a toothache include dental abscesses, gum disease, a cracked or fractured tooth, exposed tooth roots due to receding gums, and even sinus infections that create referred pain in the teeth. Toothaches can also be triggered by recent dental work, such as fillings or crowns, or by bruxism, which can cause tooth sensitivity and pain.
