Frequently Asked Question

What is tongue tie?

Tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a condition present at birth where the tissue (lingual frenulum) connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter or thicker than usual. This restricted tongue movement can lead to difficulties with breastfeeding, speech development, and oral hygiene. In infants, tongue tie may cause challenges in latching during breastfeeding, which can result in poor weight gain and frustration for both the baby and the mother. In older children and adults, tongue tie can affect speech, making certain sounds difficult to pronounce. It may lead to dental issues due to the tongue’s inability to properly clean the teeth. Treatment for tongue-tie involves a simple surgical procedure called a frenectomy, which releases the tongue to allow for improved movement.
