A dental bridge (or partial denture) is a custom-made appliance that is an excellent way to literally “bridge the gap” of a missing tooth. Artificial teeth are attached to a plastic base that resembles a natural gum look. The base of the bridge is attach and supported by abutments, which are also know as anchoring teeth.
There are two types of bridges: fixed and removable. Both are typically constructed from gold alloys, non-precious alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. The most popular type is porcelain fused to metal.
Dental bridges are very durable and with proper care they will last 10-20 years, however they may need to be replaced or re-cemented due to normal wear. Usually, two office visits are required to complete the procedure.
